Weaver-Hughes Mortuary
Office: (909) 790-3742
Gary Travis was born in Fontana, California in the Christmas of 1961
and grew up in a little town called Bloomington with his two sisters,
Beverly and Becky. He attended schools there from elementary to high
school eventually graduating from a private Christian school in Colton.
Throughout his teenage years, Gary was very active with his horses
and belonged to different horse clubs. A venue he says that kept him
sane throughout his hectic teenage life. In 1981, he met a girl named
Linda and married her in July of 1983. They have two children, Bethany,
23 and Josiah, 21. During the early years of marriage, Gary attended
college off and on. In 1989, he began training for a career that would
change his life forever. He attended Cypress Community College and
was enrolled in the Mortuary Science Program graduating in December
of 1990. He began working right out of college in the funeral industry
at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary in Riverside. Always
striving for excellence, Gary was promoted to different management
positions and was very active in the Orange Belt Funeral Director’s
Association, an organization for Riverside and San Bernardino county
funeral directors and other funeral entities. He held different positions
from board member to becoming President in 2003. In January of 2006,
Gary came to work for Weaver-Hughes Mortuary in Yucaipa as well as
Weaver Mortuary in Beaumont. “Working here gives me the opportunity
to continue doing what I absolutely love to do, helping people. It’s
a very rewarding experience.” Aside from work, Gary likes to
go church, spending time with his family and friends and going to
Disneyland. “Life should not be taken for granted considering
who gave it to us. We should live it like it was our last. Have fun
and laugh. We only get one chance at it.”
In 1949, Weaver Mortuary opened it doors to a very small community
in Beaumont, California. It was the only mortuary for miles. After
a short time, Jerry Weaver, owner of Weaver Mortuary had met W.W.
Hughes who owned a small mortuary in Loma Linda that opened in the
mid 1950’s. The two had become very good friends. Mr. Hughes
opened a mortuary in Yucaipa in 1959 and it quickly became a part
of the Yucaipa community with a reputation for the same dignified,
respectful, end of life care that Weaver had a reputation for. As
years passed, Jerry’s son, Lew, bought the mortuary from his
father. Lew grew up living over the mortuary his parents owned and
learned early on the decorum required during funeral services. He
is quite well known, not just for his compassionate business but
also for being very active in his surrounding communities.
The Hughes and Weaver families have a long shared history. Lew
bought Hughes Mortuary in 2005 and as a tribute to Mr. Hughes, he
left his name on the business making it Weaver-Hughes Mortuary.
He knows him well and will carry on the respectful work they have
both done for years. Mr. Hughes currently resides in Escondido and
is still very helpful when called upon. Weaver-Hughes Mortuary is
located at 33629 Yucaipa Blvd. just east of Oak Glen Road. Weaver
Mortuary & Crematory and Weaver-Hughes Mortuary are full service
mortuaries offering services from direct cremation to full traditional
type services. They also offer Pre-Planned arrangements for those
wishing to take care of things ahead of time.
